Tapebot is an enemy in Scrap Mechanic.

Tapebots attack by firing yellow tape rolls. It is one of the two robots in the game that has a ranged attack.

Tapebots spawn inside and outside Warehouses, and during Raids at level 7 and up.

Blue Tapebots deal 55 damage on Normal difficulty. This makes them very dangerous, as it means they can kill a Mechanic in two shots.

Blue Tapebot[]

The standard common Tapebot. It has a few sub-variants that are covered in tape.

Red Tapebot[]

A Red Tapebot.

Fires explosive projectiles. Only found on the upper floors of Warehouses.

Its projectiles deal 55 damage on impact plus 7 blast damage, bringing the total damage from a direct hit to 62.

The Spud Gun is the only viable weapon against Tapebots, so it is practically a requirement to obtain one and a supply of Potato ammunition before entering a Warehouse. Otherwise, Tapebots will advance on a target if they cannot shoot at them, so moving behind hard cover like terrain will force them to approach and possibly get into Sledgehammer range, though this can be a risky strategy to employ inside a Warehouse.

A single headshot will always destroy a Tapebot. This is the most effective way of taking them out without being detected.

Be careful when rounding corners, as there may be a Tapebot around the corner. If you do happen to be caught in the open by a Tapebot, either retreat behind cover or quickly fire off two potatoes if you are already aimed at it. Do not attempt to aim down the sights to attempt a headshot in this situation, as not only does this slow your movement, the Tapebot can easily kill you in the time it takes to aim for its head.

It is possible to hit their tape rolls back at them with the Sledgehammer, though this can be difficult to do.

  • Tapebots were built to tape up packages in Warehouses.
  • It is unknown what purpose Red Tapebots and their explosives would have served. It is possible they were involved with packing explosive materials.
    • The Straggler audio logs found in the game files provide a possible explanation: Red Tapebots were created to exterminate mice.
  • Their tape dispenser gib will fire a few rolls of their respective tape upon death. Fortunately, these tape rolls deal only 20 damage (27 for explosive tape), making them much less dangerous than the tape rolls they fire while alive.
  • Tapebots dealt only 30 damage in a pre-release version of Survival Mode. This was likely increased soon before the release of 0.4.0 to make Warehouses more challenging.
    • Tapebots also took three hits with the Spud Gun to destroy. This meant they had either 15 or 20 health, compared to the 10 health they had in 0.4.0.
      • 15/20 health is equivalent to 60/80 health in terms of post-0.5.0 values.
    • Additionally, it was possible to destroy them in a single hit to the head with the Sledgehammer.
  • Tapebots are currently the only robot in the game to have more than one variant, as well as the only one to have variant models.
  • Similar to Haybots, Tapebots may occasionally trip when descending stairs.
